Hi, I'm Troup (like army troop or troupe of minstrels).

I'm your guy if you need a copywriter in Los Angeles. I bring a decade of lessons and skills from the entertainment industry and running a start-up.

To build a portfolio, I'm completing Bookshop LA and One Creator Lab, a 20-week fellowship sponsored by Tik-Tok, Deutsch, Ogilvy, and other nice people.

This happened recently: â€‹

“He’s trying to kill me, help, please help.” Without thinking, I grabbed a can of mace, ran outside my building, and told this 6'4" guy to leave her alone. He generously offered to relieve me of my life.

Option #1: run. What smart people do.

Option #2: tell him I’d like to see him try because I’m a double black belt.

I’m not even sure they make doubles. Kung fu isn’t McDonald's.

But I’m a #2 kinda guy (sorry, that came out wrong). And I’ll tell you how I avoided getting my face smashed if you interview me.

Point is: as a copywriter, I’ll take swings. I’ll stand up when something needs standing up for. Or someone. When most smart people run away, I'll be the smart person who's got your back.

Resume-ish

People have paid me to write.

  • I sold three TV movies, with three more being shopped at Hallmark and Lifetime. Screenwriting involves briefs, concepting, notes sessions, collaboration, and the best idea wins no matter who has it. It’s deeply-felt art intended to sell ad space and subscriptions. My warm-up lap for copywriting. Keep an eye out for The 911 Killer on Lifetime. Too bad there's no health plan or 401K matching.

People have paid me to make short films.

  • I was the first white guy this town in Nepal ever saw. Perhaps they think we're all 5"7' and have giardia. The movie I filmed for a nonprofit that builds hospitals in Nepal and Nicaragua screened in eight countries, won “Best International Doc” at the Laughlin NV Film Fest 2016, and earned me “Volunteer of the Year” from the city of Boulder, CO. Most importantly, it raised money for those hospitals and built the NGO’s brand (Helping Hands Health Education). I also have been flown to Peru and Mexico to film commercials for brands (Zacuto camera equipment and Go Blue Tours).

People trust me with their children. And I've been to jail.

  • After serving as an interviewer for Dartmouth College, I launched a college consultancy in LA that I grew into a team of four, sourcing clients from partner-companies in five countries, taking me to 10 cities in China, working with 100s of clients. I also taught creative writing inside LA Juvenile Hall and saw kids write their way out of gangs and into new futures. In this career, I learned how to manage a team, connect with teens, build a brand, and that the education space isn’t my passion.

Sometimes I make silly videos for my friends.

Which proves someone married me and I therefore have mastered teamwork, collaboration, conflict resolution, and I'm not a total lunatic.
